The Ins And Outs of How We Do Business

What is the primary benefit of this training?

Initially, we hear participants say they appreciate improving conflict, problem identification, and problem resolution. They also emphasize they are working much harder to listen more effectively.

After a time, we begin to hear about happiness and resilience. As they talk, they tend to bring up trust.

Then, after an even longer time, we hear about what they’re doing to have a good life—and what they’re doing to help others.

As such, the answer to this question is, “It depends.” In particular, it depends on when the question is asked relative to when they completed the training.

Who is the target audience?

The quick answer is the target audience is people engaged in the world of work. But there’s more than that. When I first began to work on this, I definitely was trying to improve the world of work. That’s what I know. However, as I got further into it, I discovered that the research went well beyond the world of work. It is most worthwhile for nearly everyone beyond mid-teenage years. We all want to know how to enjoy our lives. Then, we all want to know how to enjoy the best life possible.

Is there a way I can learn more without spending years of study?

Yes, a quick shortcut is to find the names of key players in this training (e.g., Martin Seligman, Fred Luskin, Kim Cameron, etc.). Then locate YouTube videos they have made. These brilliant people provide great guidance on wisdom.

How much will I truly benefit from this effort?

My dear friend, John Lilly, said it best: You get out of it what you put into it. I think it’s fair to say that he got quite a lot out of it—he certainly put a great deal of effort into it.

Research has shown as many as 95 separate benefits. Some benefit business, some improve health, and the rest—most of them—benefit each of us. Just learning to listen effectively, when almost all of us have a long history of being poor listeners, will generate substantial benefits to you. I’ve seen it. Managers who listen most effectively tend to be the best.

Why does this take so long to complete? Can we go through it quicker?

There is good evidence that we begin to forget any training almost immediately. By the end of a week, we have forgotten 90% of what we have learned. Check out:

Isn’t this religion?

Not really. I had absolutely no intention of creating something pertinent to religion as I started to work on this training. I was totally focused on reducing turnover and making recruitment more effective. As it turns out, that clearly was successful.

Then, as I developed more topics, I began to see something I didn’t expect at all. The work clearly supports much of what is taught within religion. Consider—the training points out that a way to achieve the best life available to us is to be a good person.

There have been many religious leaders participate in the training. It was obvious, they said, that this work is not religion—but it provides strong support to what is taught within most religions.
